A trailer-mounted X-band radar at the Illinois Natural History Survey. The radar records sizes and other characteristics of single flying birds, bats, and insects, permitting it to be used to establish the nature and numbers of biological radar targets aloft over particular habitats.

A detailed image shows how parts of radars from distant generations are combined. Equipment for the radar was funded partly by the University of Illinois Research Board.
